IDPA style Matches

Feb 14, 2009 by JerryC | Add comment
Starting in April we will be holding an IDPA style match in the pistol pit on the second Saturday of each month. Signup begins at 9:30 am. Matches held in 2009 will be open to the public but will not be sanctioned by the IDPA. We will follow the IDPA rule book with the exception that we will not divide competitors into the 5 standard IDPA divisions. Instead we will have 4 divisions: CDP (45 Cal. pistol with full power ammo), SP (SSP/ESP - 9mm or larger), Revolver (38 or larger < 4.2" barrel) and Wildcard (any other concealed carry defensive pistol). Since we only have one pistol pit we will not be able to run multiple simultaneous stages but, depending on the turnout, we hope to offer 3 or 4 stages at each meet. If you are interested in honing your self-defense skills this is a good way to do it.

CLICK HERE to read the Official IDPA Rule Book. Some highlights include:

Your equipment should meet the following criteria:
_1). Must be practical for self-defense use
_2). Must be concealable
_3). Must be appropriate for continuous all day wear
_4). No lasers, ghost rings or other non-standard sights

Bring your pistol. 2 boxes of ammo and enough magazines/speed-loaders to score up to 18 hits per stage. Magazine loading must not exceed 8 rounds for CDP or 10 rounds for SSP/ESP even if its actual capacity is greater. As always, eye and ear protection are required. This will be a COLD range. Pistols must remain unloaded except when on the line under the supervision of a Range Officer.

IDPA Division Clarifications

Sep 21, 2008 by JerryC | Add comment
There has been some confusion on the differences between the various classes of IDPA handguns so I will try to clarify the distinctions in this article. IDPA is divided into five (5) divisions that are entirely separate. None of the following divisions compete against any other division: Stock Service Pistol (SSP); Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP); Custom Defensive Pistol (CDP); Enhanced Service Revolver (ESR); and Stock Service Revolver (SSR). At the international level the differences are significant enough to justify having all five but the distinctions are actually relatively minor. In the "read more" section below I will try to describe the differences.

At our IDPA-style matches we simplified the divisions by combining the two revolver divisions into one. We have also combined ESP and SSP into a single division. We want everyone who is interested in practicing defensive pistol skills to be able to participate with the same gun they normally carry. To accomplish this we have chosen to add an additional division for those of you who carry a handgun that meets the spirit of defensive pistol but not the requirements of an IDPA standard division. If you have a pistol that you carry for self-defense and would like to participate then bring it to a meet and ask the match director if you may shoot it in the wildcard division.

Due to the lack of interest coupled with the inclusion of the new wildcard division we are dropping the BUG division for 2009. We are also considering the further combining of the CDP division with the SSP/ESP division because of the limited number of CDP competitors. Feel free to leave your comments or send me a message to let me know how you feel about this.

August Match Results

Well, the first IDPA-style match was a hit (pun intended). We shot 4 stages and everyone had a good time polishing their defensive pistol skills. Congratulations go to Paul Eldridge for winning the ESP division and to Richard Mize for winning the CDP division. Thanks to all for helping make this first match a big success. The next match will be September 20 at 9 am.

The practical pistol course is an open 30 yd x 50 yd area where a variety of obstructions and scenarios can be organized. For convenience, one end of the PPC course contains permanently mounted drop targets and target stands.
